Ear infections and kids seem to run hand-in-hand, right? We’ve all been through this countless times.
Why are kids so prone to ear infections?
Their ear lobe tubes are small, narrow and lay horizontal so when they get a virus or bacteria, the mucus that was created has a harder time draining.
I have found with my kids, if we catch it early we can take care of it at home with essential oils and ear drops.
Here’s My Ear Ache Routine
1. E-3 Oil
We use E-3 oil by DialHerbs (link below) drops in the sore ear. We take this bottle with us everywhere. Ok, maybe not everywhere but it is definitely in our suitcases on every trip. We want to be prepared if someone wakes up in the middle of the night with ear pain. There are three oils in this this bad boy; Mullein, Garlic, and Lobelia. Mullien is a natural pain reliever which helps with swelling (so all the phlegm can get out), it has high antioxidant capacities, and helps with inflammation. The next ingredient is garlic which has been used for years to treat ear infections. Garlic contains a compound called Allicin which has potent medicinal properties. It’s anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral. So its great at fighting infections.
So Simply follow the instructions on the bottle and put a few drops in the affected ears. You can place the dropper under warm water so the drops aren’t cold when they go the ear.
Many years ago a chiropractor taught my mom how to massage the ear and scalp to get the sinuses and ear lobes to drain. He taught us to put a few drops of our in our hands and massage the scalp and ear lopes (check out my video for a demonstration). Now remember, you have to be consistent with natural things. So you may need to do this several times a day.
A few years back I woke up in the middle with a horrible pain in my ear. I hurt really bad. I put the oil I’m my ear and went back to bed. By morning the pain and gone and I didn’t have any more pain. So this oil is awesome!!
If you cannot find this oil at your health food store check out this similar oil one on Amazon.
2. Basil Essential Oil
Basil is commonly thought of as being used as a food spice but it also has wonderful medicinal purposes. It comes from the Ocimum basilicum plant and has traditionally been used as a natural anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibiotic. We never put essential oils directly in the ear but you can put them around the ear and on the neck area. You can also put a few drops on the cotton ball and place the cotton ball in the ear.
3. Melaleuca Essential Oil
Melaluca is great at lowering inflammation which will help that ear lobe to drain. It will also help if there is any infections the ear. Rub this around the ears and neck.
4. Lavendar Essentail Oil
Lavender will help calm your child because ear aches can hurt!
Add a couple drops of these oils with fractionated coconut oil and rub behind your childs ear lobe and around the ear. Also, rub them on their feet, particularly on the ear signal (as seen below).
Make this awesome blend in a roller bottle.
Here’s the recipe-
- 10 drops Bail
- 10 drops Melaleuca
- 10 drops Lavender
- Fractioned Coconut Oil
I LOVE these roller bottles here. They are cute and the best! If I am making a blend for a specific child I let them choose what color they want.
