7 Causes of Dental Problems in Children!

The baby’s breast milk or bottle sucking before going to bed at night or during sleep creates a favorable environment for microbes to rot the teeth, as milk accumulates in the mouth. For this reason, care should be taken to clean the teeth, especially after night feeding.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Dr. Tanfer Klinik – Aesthetics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery . Nihat Tanfer gave information about the factors that cause dental problems in babies and children.

1. Baby bottle caries
Sometimes it is observed that babies have brown spots on their teeth or these teeth break and fall out. In fact, these stains are dental caries and teeth are broken due to caries. The reason for the formation of cavities in babies in the early period is the cavities called bottle cavities.

The baby’s breast milk or bottle sucking before going to bed at night or during sleep creates a favorable environment for microbes to rot the teeth, as milk accumulates in the mouth. For this reason, care should be taken to clean the teeth, especially after night feeding.

Tooth decay in babies is difficult to treat, it is easier to prevent!
Since the treatment of bruises in babies is very difficult, preventive measures should be taken in the early period.
The baby’s habit of sleeping with a bottle in his mouth at night should be avoided.
Sweeteners such as sugar, honey or molasses should not be added to the pacifier or the milk in the bottle.
After feeding, the baby should definitely drink water.
Since the carbohydrate-sugar foods given to the baby to linger after the teeth come out will cause tooth decay, instead of such foods, the child has high nutritional value such as apples and carrots; It should be directed to foods that help teeth cleaning.

Teeth with bottle decay need to be treated!
If the teeth with bottle decay are not treated, they cause pain and become inflamed. Inflamed or aching teeth cause the baby to become restless and disrupt the diet. Inflammation also affects the permanent teeth that will come from below, causing their shape to be distorted. Having these teeth extracted can cause speech problems in the child.

2. Thumbsucking Thumbsucking
is a common habit at a young age. It usually goes away on its own by the age of four. The continuation of this habit at the age of permanent teeth eruption leads to structural disorders in these teeth and palate. The cause of these disorders is the pressure exerted by the finger on the front teeth and palate.
If the child continues the habit of thumb sucking until the age of 6 despite the directions made to discourage him from the habit, it is necessary to seek professional help by consulting a dentist.

3. Nail biting, pen biting
Nail biting or trying to bite or gnaw on anything can cause deformities and even abrasions in teeth as well as nails.

4. High-sugar foods
Eating highly processed, refined and high-sugar foods increases the acid level in the mouth, greatly increasing the risk of caries, easily adheres to tooth surfaces and is very difficult to clean.

5. Forcing the teeth into contact with hard objects
Breaking the nut shells with the teeth, opening the bottle caps, eating too many seeds, that is, forcing the teeth into constant contact with hard objects, can lead to distressing situations such as abrasions in the enamel layer, cracks, serious fractures and even tooth loss.

6. Acidic beverages
Acidic beverages soften the enamel layer and provide the most suitable conditions for the formation of caries in the mouth due to their excessive sugar content. Therefore, instead of acidic beverages, fruit juices without added sugar and natural beverages such as milk should be preferred.

7. Grinding Teeth
Stressful, aggressive, obsessive or self-conscious children and/or children whose parents grind their teeth are more prone to grinding their teeth. Teeth grinding causes wear on the teeth, pain in the facial muscles, wobble and sensitivity in the teeth. In the treatment, the factors that cause teeth grinding are tried to be eliminated, but if this is not successful, a night plaque that can be inserted and removed is applied to the patient.
